Entering lamb deaths for Sheep Genetics

Summary

When an animal has a lamb and it dies at birth, how should I record the dead lamb for the purpose of Sheep Genetics analysis?

Detailed Description

In order for Sheep Genetics to deliver accurate genetic information, all lamb deaths should be recorded for the dams who have been confirmed as pregnant but do not drop a live lamb. (i.e. do not carry the lamb to term or birth a dead lamb at term)

The full parentage of a 'phantom' (or dead) lamb should be recorded, substituting DAB (dead at birth) in the ID.

ie. 509999-2015-DAB001, 50999-2015-DAB002 etc.

Remember: It is important that the phantom lamb information includes the sire and dam, otherwise the reproductive information cannot be used to feed back into breeding values.
