Automatic drafting and capturing a weight

Summary

When using automatic drafting Live Entry prevents you from manually entering data for the selected animal. This is because there is no guarantee that you will enter all the required data before the animal gets automatically saved and drafted.

Detailed Description

Introduction

When using automatic drafting Live Entry prevents you from manually entering data for the selected animal. This is because there is no guarantee that you will enter all the required data before the animal gets automatically saved and drafted.

You can however capture a weight and even certain persistant data (data that does get reset for every animal). This kb article will describe the process.

NOTE : Not all fields in the data entry panel are classed as persistent, so if you select a non-persistent field then it will be reset once the next animal is read. There is nothing that can be done to change a non-persistent field to be persistent.

NOTE : if you wish to be able to manually enter data against every animal that comes through, then auto drafting is NOT what you want to use. In that situation you should use either SEMIAUTO or MANUAL drafting.

When you first open the drafting template

  • When you first open a template that has drafting set to Auto you will see this message :

  • You will also notice that the Data Entry screen has been disabled and you can't enter any data into it.

Setting the persistant fields before you start drafting

Before you start drafting you will need to set the persistent fields.

To set the persistant fields in your data entry template simply go into the draft setup and disable it:

  • Click on Setup > Drafting menu option.
  • Untick the Enable Drafting check box.

  • Draft Setup should now look like this:

  • Click on the OK button to close the drafting window.
  • Set the persistent fields. See example below where Stage/Obs Code and Management Group have been set. These fields are persistent and will be assigned to every animal.

To then re-enable the drafting you will need to go back into the drafting setup:

  • Click on the Setup > Drafting menu option.
  • Tick Enabled Drafting check box.
  • Reselect Type of drafting  back to automatic. (WARNING: You MUST set the type of drafting back to AUTO).
  • Click on the OK button to close the drafting window.

  • You can now start drafting as normal.

How do I see the weight captured against an animal

  • Because the animal is saved as soon as the weight is captured, you will not be able to directly see the weight that gets entered into the weight field on the data entry window. You can however see the weight in the handled animals list. See example below:
